Frontier AI models can now find critical vulnerabilities in open source code faster than any human research team, and attackers are exploiting that same capability. The gap between discovery and exploitation, once measured in months, has collapsed to hours. No single vendor closes that gap alone.
What Is Athena
Athena is the industry coalition Chainguard built to protect open source software from AI Attacks. Members pool pre-disclosure vulnerability findings, build hardened fixes, and drive durable patches upstream before a flaw ever goes public. In three weeks, the coalition has processed more than 40,000 vulnerabilities. 42% are rated critical or high, and 7% sit in packages over five years old, proof that age and trust don’t correlate with safety.
What Cycode Brings to the Coalition
We’re joining Athena alongside Akamai, JFrog, Morgan Stanley, Qualys, and Upwind, extending a group already anchored by BNY, Cisco, Cloudflare, JPMorganChase, and PwC.
Cycode’s role starts one layer earlier than most: the code itself, and the AI tools now writing it. The Context Intelligence Graph exists to answer the question a pre-disclosure feed can’t answer on its own, not just whether a vulnerability exists, but whether it’s actually reachable in a specific codebase.
How Cycode Customers Benefit
As Athena surfaces open source vulnerabilities across the coalition, Cycode checks that list against your environment: is the affected component actually present in your codebase, is it reachable and exploitable in your specific application, and if so, how to patch it. That turns a broad vulnerability feed into a direct answer for your environment, not just a general advisory to sort through.
Frontier models have made finding these vulnerabilities easy. The danger was never discovery, it’s the window between a flaw being found and a fix reaching everyone before attackers move on it. Athena closes that window by having the coalition find and patch together, faster than any one vendor could alone, and Cycode customers benefit from that speed too.
